After years of study, it was discovered that Binaural beats are capable of cultivating relaxation even during times of high stress, and as such have been labeled the digital drug with remarkable relaxation and meditation powers. The beats are effective in freeing the mind and creating that realm of calm space we all need daily.

WHAT ARE BINAURAL BEATS?

Binaural beat recordings are specially generated sounds, designed to alter our brainwaves and consciousness. The basic idea behind binaural beats is that our brains operate at specific bandwidths, which are measured in frequencies. Our brainwaves change depending on how we are feeling and what we are doing. Using binaural beats, we can emulate natural brainwave frequencies and then slowly turn them to another brainwave frequency. This is the base of the theory of entrainment.

When the perceived beat frequency corresponds to the delta, theta, alpha, beta, or gamma range of brainwave frequencies, the brainwaves entrain to or move towards the beat frequency. For example, if a 315Hz sine wave is played into the right ear and a 325Hz one into the left ear, the brain is entrained towards the beat frequency 10Hz (alpha range). Since the alpha range is associated with relaxation, this has a relaxing effect, or if in the beta range, more alertness.

Binaural beat stimulation has been extensively used in attempts to induce a variety of states of consciousness, and there has been some work done in regards to the effects of these stimuli on relaxation, focus, attention, and states of consciousness.

Studies have shown that repeated training to distinguish close frequency sounds leads to plastic reorganization of the brain.

The Magic of Theta Waves

The increase of these audios downloads has soared in the last few years as more scientific studies emerge documenting the benefits, and as the medical profession increasingly turns to use theta therapy to cure behavioral and cognitive disorders.

THETA WAVES
Theta brainwaves occur most often in sleep but are also dominant in deep meditation. Theta is our gateway to learning, memory, and intuition. In theta, our senses are withdrawn from the external world and focused on signals originating from within. Theta waves frequencies can clean our paradigms and limiting beliefs, allowing our intrinsic personality to emerge. Smooth brain communication promotes focus and emotional balance, helping us reach our full personal potential.

Studies on Neuroplasticity suggest that long-term or short-term practice of binaural beats meditation results in different levels of activity in the brain. Regions associated with such qualities as attention, anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and the ability of the body to heal itself. These functional changes are caused by changes in the physical structure of the brain.

The ultimate goal of many meditators is to hang out in the hypnogogic state. Also known as lucid dreaming, it is the state between our awake and dream life.  In this aware state, you are cognizant that you are dreaming or meditating. It is like sitting back in a reclining chair in your own home theatre and watching your meditation unfold.

Meditators seek to achieve the hypnogogic state because at this stage they are more likely to remember their meditations. Those who have mastered this state quickly fill up their dream journals with meditative and nocturnal wanderings. For most, however, maintaining this state takes practice and real brainwave control.  It is at this stage that you are also the most likely to fall asleep. A few tips in brainwave control can help deepen and enhance your experience in the hypnogogic state.

The most popular method for inducing the hypnogogic state is borrowed from lucid dreaming but it works for meditators, too. It is called Waked-Induced Lucid Dreaming (WILD). The concept behind WILD is to take control of your meditation from the onset. It is best to try WILD when you are rested. If you are dead tired, it will be more difficult to resist falling asleep. You may want to try it first thing in the morning. Consider setting your alarm for very early while you are still in a dreamy state. When you are closer to the REM (rapid eye movement) state, it will be easier to achieve the hypnogogic state.

Step One

Start with relaxation meditation. Relax your mind and body and let the day’s stress float away. Take your meditation to the next step by going deeper into the meditation. The object is to activate the alpha state – the eyes closed awake state.  In the hypnogogic state, the alpha waves are activated between 8 to 13 Hertz (Hz). Let your body go numb but keep your conscious mind active. This takes brainwave control. The key is to stay awake and aware. Many meditators start off using brainwave entrainment recordings to reach a deeper meditation state.

Step Two

In stage two, your task is to relax more deeply and sit back and enjoy as the show begins on your internal movie screen. Some meditators use the back of the eyelids as a screen. Others feel their entire mind opening up beyond its physical confines to a virtual 360-degree screen. Next, you should start to see hypnogogic colors, symbols and imagery. You may see people and places. Stay very relaxed and continue to be a passive observer at this state. A common response is to perk up and try and get a closer look or analyze what you see. Unfortunately, this active engagement can interrupt your deep meditation. Observe but do not respond to the hypnogogic imagery.

Step Three

The hypnogogic imagery will begin to become more meaningful and connected and tell a story. Here, real brainwave control is required to remain in the alpha state. Tell yourself that you are dreaming: “I am watching my dream. I am an active participant in my dream. I am in control of my dream.” You may feel a sense of physical paralysis as your mind becomes more active but your body remains in a deep state of relaxation. This is a common experience and no need for alarm.

Do not forget to have your meditation or dream journal beside your bed. It will fill up quickly!

At-home Meditation

At-home meditation is the most convenient place to do meditation but it also is an environment that can introduce the most distractions.  Brainwave entrainment products and other tips and techniques can help you stay focused.

Sleep

The biggest challenge for many of us is trying not to fall asleep during meditation. The best time to do meditation is after a few hours of sleep. It is no fun dozing off just as you see a tunnel that you believe is your escape into the astral world. You had planned on flying over ancient Greece and maybe even dropping in on a lecture by Plato but instead you are deep in a dream state and being chased by dragons.  To avoid sleep, find the right time of day for you to practice meditation. The mind is often the most at peace during early morning before the stresses of the day set in. Meditating with the sunrise is always a serene experience. An early meditation also helps you turn on a positive state and take on the world during the day with a positive mindset.

If you do start to fall asleep, a change in tone will often return you to a state of wakefulness. Build a Buddhist alter if you so desire with icons that are meaningful to you.  Or perhaps you want to recreate your favorite meadowland from childhood in your garden.

At-home meditation should be comfortable but not too cozy. Do not try and do meditation in your favorite lounge chair or hammock in the backyard. Your spine should be straight, allowing energy to flow up through the energy channels aligned with the chakras.

Do not confine your meditation practice to one place and one time during the day. You can take your at-home meditation with you during the day. When you reach a meditation state you like, anchor it. An anchor is any physical stimulus you choose. It may be as simple as touching your thumb and baby finger together. The next time you are stressed out by a work task – before leading a team meeting or delivering a speech, for example – call up your anchor, relax, smile and remind yourself that you are going to do great.
